I was born October 23, 1968 in Goshen, Indiana. My mother was a Roman Catholic and my father was a backslidden United Pentecostal. From 1968 to 1974 we attended the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. When I was 6 years old my parents went to a revival meeting at the United Pentecostal Church in Warsaw, Indiana. They converted to the Apostolic faith and helped change my life forever. I was baptized in Jesus’ name and filled with the Holy Ghost on February 7, 1976 when I was 8 years old.
My parents were very involved in teaching Sunday School classes and Home Bible Studies. My parents won dozens of people to the Apostolic faith. As a child I went with them to pick up people for church, to pray people through to the Holy Ghost right in their home, to teach them a HBS, and to earnestly contend for the faith. This birthed in me a great love for God, His work, His church and for the lost.
As a teenager I was very active in church. I was part of the choir. I went to all the Youth Rallies, Youth Conventions, and Youth Congresses that I could get to. In 1984 at the Indiana District UPCI campground, after a sermon preached by Rev. Wayne Huntley, I felt the call to preach and accepted the call. I became a zealot for Jesus Christ. I held a Bible study at my church for a bunch of my friends at school. Ten kids and one parent came to the study. Two kids and one parent got baptized in Jesus’ name and filled with the Holy Ghost! I was hooked- I loved soul winning. We never had a really good youth program at the church when I was growing up. I determined in my heart to make sure when I ever pastored, that I would make sure the youth had the very best programs.
I graduated in 1987 from Warsaw Community High School in Warsaw, Indiana. (Go Tigers!) I later went on to recieve my degree in Social Sciences from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. (Go Bobcats!)
In 1987, on the final night of Youth Camp, I went out with a beautiful, kind, friendly talented Apostolic girl named Jennifer. Her dad was a Sectional Presbyter in the Indiana District, and pastored the church in Sheridan, Indiana. Jennifer and I fell in love and got married June 3, 1989. We lived in Warsaw, Indiana for 2 years and I assisted as a local minister in the Warsaw UPC for that time.
After doing some weekend evangelizing around Indiana, I accepted the Youth Pastorate of Apostolic Bible Church in Brownsburg, Indiana. This was my first full time position and one I loved very much. In my first year as Youth Pastor in Brownsburg we baptized 32 brand new teenagers in Jesus’ name. We had awesome Youth programs and a very active, spiritual, and large youth group. While at Brownsburg I got the awesome opportunity to be a guest lecturer at Indiana Bible College. I left Brownsburg, Indiana to be an Assistant Pastor at two churches: Greater Life Bible Church of Sheridan, Indiana and Zion Apostolic Tabernacle in Frankfort, Indiana. I was ordained in the United Pentecostal Church International by Rev. Nathaniel A. Urshan and Rev. Paul D. Mooney at Calvary Tabernacle in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The year 1995 was an incredible year. My wife birthed a new born baby boy named Kedrick on July 9, 1995. We also birthed together a Home Missions church in Indiana. We started with nothing and with nobody other than ourselves and God and within 6 years, 105 people had been baptized in Jesus’ name. When we left we had an attendance average of around 75 and a brand new church building.
I left Indiana to take the pastorate of River Valley Aposotlic Worship Center in Ohio in June of 2001. The attendance average was 49, and people and money were leaving fast. I was elected Senior Pastor with 23 “yes” votes and “1” no vote. Over the next 4 years we completely reorganized the church, started a Christian School, and excited the people about a passion and vision for revival. We had 97 people baptized in Jesus’ name during our ministry there, and had an attendance average at one point that hit 165. I enjoyed my stay in the Ohio District of the UPCI.
In May of 2005 I left Ohio to accept the position of Pastor in Indiana. It was in October of 2005 that I announced to my friends and family that I was gay, and thus ended my pastorate in Indiana and my association with the United Pentecostal Church International I had obtained for 15 years.
As a child, my first feelings of attraction were to males. I was never molested or sexually assaulted. All through my life I would do great at resisting and then occasionally go to a place with a “gay” atmosphere. I began to realize I was gay, and couldn’t get away from it. I prayed, fasted, read the word, tried reprogramming myself, went to counseling, made new commitments at dozens of camps, rallies, conventions, and conferences. Deliverance from homosexuality never came, though I sought it earnestly.
One day after I was held up at gunpoint in Columbus, Ohio, I went through my mid-life crisis. I realized if I had died then, no one would have known the real me. I began to earnestly study psychology, theology, and myself in regards to my orientation. I went on the internet and discovered there were many gay Pentecostals. I held many conversations with several of them about being gay and Pentecostal. I was- an Apostolic gay man.
I visited a Metropolitan Community Church in San Diego, California. I felt the presence of God there in a real way. In prayer God spoke to me and said, “Kevin, I don’t care that you are gay, I care that you are dishonest.”
I attended Jesus Metropolitan Community Church in Indianapolis. Rev. Jeff Miner was my pastor. I also attended a GLBT affirming Pentecostal church in Northern Indiana. However I was feeling the call to start a new church. In July of 2006 I became pastor of a great church- All Spirit, but minus the judgementalism and legalism: True Love Apostolic Church. Today we have a loving, kind, forgiving, spirit-filled church, excited about what God is going to do in many, many lives. I currently hold license with the Affirming Pentecostal Church International..
I have pledged my life to helping GLBT people find true reconciliation with Jesus Christ and their Apostolic faith.
God bless you for taking the time to read this.
